PKD in British cats: what every prospective owner should understand

When researching British Shorthairs, you'll inevitably come across PKD — Polycystic Kidney Disease. As a prospective owner, it's vital to understand what this is and how responsible breeders manage the risk.

    What is PKD?

PKD is an inherited condition where cysts form in the kidneys, eventually leading to kidney failure. British Shorthairs are among the breeds with a known genetic predisposition to this condition.

    How is it Screened?

A reliable DNA test exists for the PKD1 mutation. By ensuring that all breeding cats test negative (clear) for this mutation, breeders can eliminate the disease from their lines. Ultrasound screening can also detect cysts in older cats.

    What to Ask Your Breeder

Always ask if the parents have been DNA tested for PKD and ask to see the results. Good breeders are transparent about this and will be happy to share documentation. At Cattuna Cattery, all our breeding cats are DNA tested for known hereditary conditions.
