    That single moment sparked a passion that has only grown deeper with time. The British Shorthair and British Longhair are breeds of quiet beauty and steady temperament — cats that bring a calm, grounding presence to a home while surprising you with their affection.

    Raising them is a privilege, and sharing the joy of the breed with other families is the part of what we do that we love most.

    TEMPERAMENT

    More affectionate than you might expect

    We wish more people understood just how affectionate and people-focused the British breed can be. All of our Cattuna cats are lap cats who love cuddles, affection and spending time with their humans.

    We believe their beautiful temperaments come from carefully selecting our breeding cats and giving every kitten plenty of gentle handling, love and human interaction from birth. Our kittens are raised as part of our family, helping them grow into confident, loving companions who settle into their new homes with confidence and ease.

    Our goal for every Cattuna kitten: well socialised, easy to handle, loves affection — and settled into their new home in less than 24 hours.

    COAT CARE

    Dense, plush coats thatreward regular care

    British Shorthairs and British Longhairs have beautiful, dense coats that require regular care. British Shorthairs generally benefit from brushing once or twice a week, while British Longhairs should be brushed several times a week to help prevent knots and matting.

    Both varieties may shed more heavily during seasonal coat changes, so additional brushing can help during these times. We also recommend regular nail trimming and checking the eyes and ears as part of their grooming routine.

    Brush weekly (Shorthair) or several times a week (Longhair)

    A consistent routine keeps the coat healthy and reduces loose hair around the home. Longhairs need more frequent attention to prevent knots and matting.

    Extra brushing during seasonal sheds

    Both varieties shed more heavily during coat changes. Stepping up brushing at these times keeps your cat comfortable and their coat in top condition.

    Regular nail trimming

    Trim nails every couple of weeks to keep them at a comfortable length and protect your furniture and floors.

    Eyes & ears check

    A quick, gentle check of the eyes and ears as part of the grooming routine helps catch any issues early and keeps your cat comfortable.

    HEALTH

    Health considerations

    Responsible breeding begins with health. We screen our British cats for the conditions most relevant to the breed, and no cat enters or remains in our breeding programme without passing these tests.

    Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD)

    PKD is a heritable condition that can cause progressive kidney issues in cats. Because it is caused by a dominant gene, it can be reliably detected by DNA testing. All of our breeding cats are DNA tested for PKD.

    Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM)

    HCM is a heart muscle condition that can affect British cats. We screen our breeding cats for HCM as part of our commitment to breeding healthy, sound kittens. For full details on our testing programme, see our About page.
